Freed Takes 3rd, Navarro T5 at AJGA’s Preseason at Cripple Creek

May 7, 2012 by

Chris Navarro (2015) of Davidsonville, MD was in the first group that teed off in the first round of the AJGA Preseason at Cripple Creek (Dagsboro, DE).  That day there were two fog delays totalling 3 hours and 40 minutes.  Navarro’s group managed to get out on the course before the delay and, like the other competitors, battled through the delays and the fog.  He fired a 77, good enough for a T11 and 8 back from Rockville’s (MD) Jonathan Carr (2014) , the first-round leader with a 3-under 69.

Going into the second round, conditions were a bit improved (no fog!), but there were some winds to contend with.  It was difficult to say where another 77 would place you on the final leader board.  As it turns out, another book-end 77 (154) was Navarro’s final number.  And, it was enough to carry him to a final T5 position.  It’s funny how things work out.  Navarro eagled the par-4 #3 in round one and bogeyed the hole on the second day.  He bogeyed the Par-4 9th in round one and birdied on the second day.  In his final tally, on the second day, he was 3 strokes better than the first day on the front 9  and 3 strokes worse on the back 9.  That’s golf folks.  Consistency, if nothing else, pays dividends in this game.

Right behind Navarro were Luke Malanchuk (2013) of Arlington, VA (78/77) and Carr (69/86).  Both at 155 for a T8.  Carr, after shooting that 69 in round one, couldn’t right the ship in the second round.  The back nine was his friend on the first day, putting together a string of three birds in a row and four in all, for a 3-under 33.  On the second day, he managed a 44.

Another DC Metro area junior, Cody Lissner (2014) of Ellicott City, MD rounded it out with a T10 (75/81 – 156).  Villanova, PA junior competitor Carey Bina (2013) took the big 1st place hardware with scores of 75 and a 1-under 71 final round (146).

In the Girls Division, the lone DC Metro area representative Elizaveta Freed (2014) of Alexandria, VA captured a solo 3rd place finish.   Freed posted scores of 84 and 80 (164).  Eight strokes back of 1st Place finisher Danielle Dalessandro (2013) of Moosic, PA.  Dalessandro carded rounds of 75 and 81 (156).

After the first round 84, Freed was in a T5 position with four other players.  She bested all four and jumped over a couple of others on the second day to take sole possession of the 3rd place prize.  Grit and grind style of play will take you places.

All together, there were 25 competitors from Maryland, DC, and Virginia.  To see all the final scores and learn where they all finshed in the tournament, go to the AJGA tournament page here.

Mike Blasey, another Landon golfer, also finished T12 at 157, that just shows the talent the Bears’ roster has when their fourth player can perform that well, and he is only a freshman.

True – we only list to the Top 10. As you know, there were plenty of juniors from Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Also, we mentioned in a previous article in the High School News section that Landon could be in the position that Prep was in for the past 5 or so years. Blasey is one of the reasons.
