Area Juniors Continue to Test Their Skills in AJGA

April 21, 2011 by

The American Junior Golf Association will be conducting the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior All-Star at Chateau Elan in Brasleton, Georgia.  The 54-hole stroke play event is scheduled to begin on Friday (4/22).  There will be cuts made after 36 holes.

Once again, the DC Metro area will be represented at this highest level of junior golf.  Shannon Brooks (Vienna, VA), fresh off a win at the SERVPRO Capital Area Golf Tour’s Cardinal Cup last weekend, looks to do well after her  local tune-up victory.  She is a promising young golfer from the Class of 2015.

On the boys side, there is Patrick Moriarty, Jr. (Rockville, MD), Nathan Chuwait (Herndon, VA), and Edric Wung (McLean, VA).  All three have extensive junior golf experience.

Chuwait, the youngest of the three, is an outstanding player from the Class of 2016.  He has quite a few top-tens in national events over the past several years.  Most recent, at last month’s US Kids Golf Jekyll Island Cup, he finished 4th in a field of 43, posting rounds of 76 and 74.  This will be his first AJGA event.

Just a few weeks ago Wung competed in his first AJGA event, the Preseason Junior at Ocala.  He finished 39th in a field of 69 with rounds of 81 and 78.  No doubt he is looking to better that finish.  He is in the Class of 2014.

We’ve seen Moriarty compete at the local level through the MAPGA Junior Tour.  He can put up low numbers and pulled a T2 in that Tour’s 2010 Championship held at the U.S. Naval Academy.  He is in the Class of 2013.

This is the first tournament in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series.  The series is a collection of events specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12-15 and presents opportunities for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into Open AJGA tournaments.

For more information on the tournament, see the AJGA’s website.
