Three Local Juniors Move on to Afternoon Matches at US Junior

July 22, 2010 by

Denny McCarthy (Burtonsville, MD), seeded 32, faced the #1 seed Curtis Thompson (Coral Springs, FL) in the Round of 32 morning match play at the US Junior Amateur Championship being played at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Michigan.  McCarthy birdied the 407 yard, par 4, first hole to Thompson’s par and never looked back.  McCarthy never got ahead by more than 2-up until #14 (par 4, 385 yards) where Thompson bogeyed to McCarthy’s par. McCarthy, at 3-up, went dormie after #15 and closed out the match 3 & 2 after #16. McCarthy will meet the 49th seed Devon Purser (Clearfield, UT). Purser defeated Adam Ball (Richmond, VA) in the morning match.  Ball, the reigning 2009 Virginia State Golf Association Junior Champion, is one of the top-ranked juniors in Virginia.

Ninth-seeded Ben Warnquist (Rockville, MD) won his morning match against Bryson Dechambeau (Clovis, CA), 3 & 2.  Both players battled all morning.  Warnquist went 1-up after #1 and maintained this lead most of the match, although Dechambeau got back to All Square on two occasions.  But, starting at #13, Warnquist strung out three pars to Dechambeau’s three bogeys, getting to dormie at #15.  Each player made par on the 169-yard par 3, #16, wrapping it up for Warnquist.  He will meet the #8 seed Richard Jung (Canada) in the afternoon match.  Jung beat Sam Straka (Valdosta, GA) 5 & 3.  Straka was the 40th seed.

Andrew Lister (Haymarket, VA), seeded at 15 met up with Stephen Behr (Florence, SC) in the morning.  Behr is the 18th seed.  Things started pretty well for Lister.  He gained the lead after a birdie at #2 (Par 4, 443 yards) and managed to get to 3-up after #10.  But, from there, Behr started to make a move.  He chiseled and chiseled, getting the match back to All Square after #16.  The two sparred through extra holes with Lister finally coming out on top after 21 holes.  Lister, in good fashion, won it with a birdie to Behr’s par on the 558-yard, par 5, #3.  Lister will meet Robby Shelton (Wilmer, AL) in the afternoon match. See below for more on Shelton.

Well, there will be no repeat for the 2009 US Junior Amateur Champion, Jordan Spieth, as he was defeated by Robby Shelton, 1-up.  Spieth was the runner-up in stroke play this year and seeded 2nd.  Shelton, the #31 seed, moves on to play Lister.

[...] Afternoon third round play at the the US Junior Amateur being held at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Michigan dealt a weather delay to the players about mid-way through their rounds.  That gave some players an opportunity to regroup and take advantage of the situation.  The original group of 64 is now down to eight players.  The quarterfinals will be played tomorrow morning with the semi-finals to take place in the afternoon.  To catch up on the earlier round news, see our other articles here first, then here.
