And Then There Was One – Two of Three Local Juniors Ousted in US Junior

July 22, 2010 by

Afternoon third round play at the the US Junior Amateur being held at Egypt Valley Country Club in Ada, Michigan dealt a weather delay to the players about mid-way through their rounds.  That gave some players an opportunity to regroup and take advantage of the situation.  The original group of 64 is now down to eight players.  The quarterfinals will be played tomorrow morning with the semi-finals to take place in the afternoon.  To catch up on the earlier round news, see our other articles here first, then here.

Denny McCarthy (Burtonsville, MD) is the lone local DC Metro area player left in the competition.  In the morning, McCarthy took on Curtis Thompson (Coral Springs, FL) who was the #1 seed as the Medalist in the stroke play portion of the event.  McCarthy had a so-so performance in stroke play and wound up as the #32 seed.  McCarthy defeated Thompson, 3 &2. Some are calling this an upset.  From the standpoint that the #32 beat the #1, sure it’s an upset.  However, McCarthy (who reportedly has committed to the University of Virginia) is one of the top juniors in the country and one need only look at his record to know that he wasn’t going to lay down just because he’s the #32 guy.  At this level of play and at this point in the competition, those seedings are nothing but numbers.

In the afternoon match, McCarthy met Devon Purser (Clearfield, UT).  This was a close match.  Purser took the lead after #2 and held it through #6 when McCarthy got it back to All Square on the 539-yard, par 5, 7th.  The match remained that way up to the 13th, where Purser birdied to go 1-up.  McCarthy came right back with a birdie of his own on #14 to even it out.  From there, McCarthy gathered a 2-up lead at 16, conceding one at 17 and winning 1-up through 18.  He will meet Richard Jung (Canada) tomorrow morning.

Speaking of Jung, he bested one of the DC Metro locals today to win that match-up with McCarthy.  He defeated Ben Warnquist (Rockville, MD), 3 & 2.  Warnquist is an outstanding player who attends Dematha.  He had a strong tournament this year and there is little doubt that you will see more of him in the near and not-so-near future.  In his match, he never had the lead.  He got down early and was able to get to 1-down at #10 but just couldn’t tilt the game in his direction.

Last of the DC Metro locals (but not the least) is Andrew Lister (Haymarket, VA).  He got matched against 14-year old Robby Shelton (Wilmer, AL).  Shelton is on fire.  With what can easily be described as the upset of the tournament by far was his victory over the US Junior’s defending champion, Jordan Spieth.  He won that morning match 1-up.  Shelton seems to like the back nine.  That’s where he made up ground against Spieth and it’s also about where he took Lister’s lead away and held on.  Lister had the lead going into #8, where the match got back to All Square.  From there, Shelton went 1-up after #9 and gathered a couple more along the way to win 3 &1.  Lister is another outstanding player from the DC Metro area who will continue to do good things with his game.  Shelton had better keep that fire going as he meets Anthony Paolucci (Del Mar, CA), the number one ranked player in the country right now.
