Sweet, Austin Stage Comebacks to claim MidAtlantic Junior Titles

June 26, 2010 by

Keegan Boone (Bethesda, MD)  sat on his haunches, his golf cap scrunched in his fingers and with his left hand he pulled at his hair.  He looked anguished. He had just lost a three shot lead in the final round of the Middle Atlantic Junior Boys Amateur and he was headed for a playoff with Jordan Sweet (Bowie, MD).  After he failed to get up and down on the par-3 15th, Sweet trailed Boone by his largest margin since the front side,  but he played the last three holes in 1-under to force the extra holes.

Like prizefighters, the two threw their best punches at one another in the playoff.  Boone hit his approach on the first playoff hole to 4 feet but failed to convert. Again on the third hole, his iron shot wound up within 10 feet and again a miss. Sweet turned the tables on the difficult dogleg fourth playoff hole and put his long iron just above the hole within six feet.  He too missed as the putt slid by on the right side.  Both players were hitting fairways and greens but neither could get any putts to drop.

On the fifth extra hole, Boone hooked his tee ball into the trees on the left.  It came to rest between two massive trees with a little opening on this par 5 for his second shot.  Sweet, as he had most of the day, waited ahead in the fairway some 30 yards closer to the hole.  A ricochet and a chip out followed by a huge three wood left Boone pin high to the left of the green in four.

Sweet patiently observed all this before he ripped a four iron to the right edge of the green 45 feet away from the cup.  His first putt curled over a ridge but came up short almost ten feet.  Boone’s chip narrowly missed, but Sweet two putted for the winning par.  Jordan Sweet played his last nine holes including the playoff in even par to claim the 69th Middle Atlantic Junior Amateur Championship.

When Alex Austin (Burke, VA) and Diana Brown (Potomac, MD) walked off the 18th green after their second round, neither knew exactly how they stood but Alex’s smile was as brilliant as the sparkle-covered visor she wore.   She had overcome a two stroke deficit in the last three holes to repeat as the 53rd Girls Junior Champion by one stroke over Brown.

Both girls agreed that the pins were in some very difficult positions and that they “never had a straight putt out there.”  Brown couldn’t get anything to drop but was especially frustrated by the fact that she had taken a two shot lead after the front side but then a bogey followed by a double bogey opened the door for Austin.  Alex wasn’t certain if she needed the birdie putt on the last hole to win or not but she was focused on her game and only her game. (You can learn more about Alex by reading DC Metro Junior Golf’s exclusive interview, here.)

Sam Stewart (Baltimore, MD) shot the day’s low round of two under par.  He hit 15 greens but bemoaned the fact that he missed two “easy five footers” that would have put him in the playoff. He fired 75-70 = 145 for third place.  Brian McCormick (Kensington, MD) followed his opening 74 with a 75 good for a fourth place finish at 149.  Sam Oshrine (Baltimore, MD) posted 74-76 = 150 for  fifth place.  Two-time defending champion Denny McCarthy (Burtonsville, MD) opted not to defend his title this year.

The Championships were played at Northwest Park Golf Course in Silver Spring, MD.  The boys played from 6,869 yards and the girls from 5,815 yards.  Both playing par 72.
