Alexandra Austin In The Spotlight

June 8, 2010 by

We recently caught up with Alexandra Austin at a Capital Area Golf Tour event.  Alexandra is a junior at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, VA.  She is the top player on her school team.  In the 2009 Virginia High School League Girls Championship she finished 7th in a field of 87 with rounds of 77, 78 (155).  She has several top-5 finishes in recent Junior Golf competition as well as having finished 11th in a field of 37 at the 2009 Virginia State Golf Association’s Junior Girls Championship.

And, DC Metro Junior Golf is pleased to announce that Alexandra was recently selected by the Virginia State Golf Association to play on The Virginia Girls Team for the 12th Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Team Matches.  The Teams consist of eight players from each State and the players will compete in four-ball and singles matches.  This is quite an accomplishment and one that is well-deserved.  The matches are scheduled to be played July 10 and 11 at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, Maryland.

Alexandra, thank you for taking the time to talk with DC Metro Junior Golf, your time is appreciated.

- First, do you prefer Alexandra or Alex?

I like Alex but my mom likes Alexandra

- In the morning before your first round at this past weekend’s Capital Area Golf Tour tournament at Fairfax National Golf Club, you took the ACT exams, right?  What did you think of the exam?  Are you glad it’s over?

The exam was much easier then the SAT, and yes I am glad it’s over for the time being, I still have to take my SAT again in June and then I am going to take the ACT again in October.

- Any tips for others out there who haven’t taken it yet?

Make sure you take all the practice tests online to help prepare you.

- That’s dedication.  Dedication to getting into college and dedication to your sport.  You posted a decent score of 78 that day.  Would you recommend others take the ACT before a tournament?

No I do not, my brain was fried by the end of the day, it took a lot more to focus on golf as the day progressed because of the test in the morning.

- Speaking of college, I know that you are currently going through the recruiting process.  You are looking to take your game to the college level.  Tell us a little about what you have done to this point to get your name in front of coaches.

I picked out all the colleges that I am interested in, and I sent those coaches my resume and attached my swing video.

- Have you received positive or constructive feedback from coaches?

Yes, even when the coaches said they were no longer recruiting for my class, all of the emails have been positive.

- What about visiting schools?  Have you visited schools or do you plan to do so in the near future?  And, since you are a junior, any visits made are “unofficial,” right?

I recently just took an unofficial visit to the University of Louisville. And I plan to take more this summer.

- You played in an IJGT tournament recently at the Duke University Golf Club.  There was a college coach who was there to watch you play.  Is that the first time that you know of where you were being watched by a college coach?  Also, tell our readers a little about the experience.

Yes that was the first time I knew I was being watched by the coach. The night before the event I was really nervous, and the first 3 holes is when you’re the most nervous, but after that I just focused more on my game rather than the coach being there.

- It sounds like you are doing all the right things and we wish you luck in your pursuit.  Please keep us updated on your progress.  Let’s move on to another area.

- Please tell us how you got started playing golf?

My mom got me started at the age of 8.

- What is it about golf that keeps you so dedicated and determined to get to the next level?

I love playing golf and being out on the golf course, it really relaxes me. Also my family supports me 100%, so without having that support from them pushing me forward to reach my goals, it would be hard to stay determined.

- Do you think there is one part of your game that you feel is stronger than the others?

Yes, my driver and irons are stronger than my short game.

- Do you have a practice routine during the week?

Normally I go to the golf course and will hit balls on the range and chip and putt for the day. Sometimes I will go play 9 holes after working on my short game.

- We got a chance to see you play a little bit today and noticed how composed and calm you appeared to be.  I didn’t see you hit a bad shot or misplay a shot but I am sure you have at one point or another.  We all do!  What do you do, or maybe tell yourself, after playing a bad shot to help stay in the game.

I only give myself 10 seconds to be mad about that shot. I try to go through my head in those 10 seconds to figure out what went wrong, and then I forget about it and move onto hitting the next one better.

- I always like to ask this one since we live in an area that has four seasons.  What do you do in the winter months?  How do you keep your game sharp? Or do you just layoff in the winter?

During the Winter months I practice at an indoor facility.

- What are your plans for the rest of the spring golf season and the summer season?

I am going to be playing almost every day this summer and also in a lot of tournaments.

- Do you have any “must play” tournaments in mind at this point?

One of my big ones that is coming up is the USGA Junior Girls Qualifier for the Championship.  If I can qualify, then the Championship is a huge event.

- How about high school golf next fall?  How do you think your team will shape up?

The high school golf team is in a re-building year and I’m not sure what the expectations are going to be at this point.

What advice can you give the junior players out there that are looking to improve their game?  You know, for someone looking to make their high school team or maybe looking to step into the upper levels of junior golf.

Just to practice and start out playing local tournament events to get tournament experience. Then gradually move up to the bigger tournaments where there is a wider range of talent.

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to meet and talk.  It was a pleasure and we wish you nothing but low scores and success in all that you do.  Stay in touch and let us know how things are going.

Ok. Thanks!

[...] In the 53rd Junior Girls Championship, Alex Austin (Burke, VA) shot two-over 74 and is tied for the lead with Shelby Foote (Potomac Falls, VA) and Diana Brown (Potomac, MD).  Each of the contestants battled the heat more than the course as front nine scores were lower than those on the back side in the rising temperatures.  To learn more about Alex Austin, see our exclusive interview here. [...] Both girls agreed that the pins were in some very difficult positions and that they “never had a straight putt out there.”  Brown couldn’t get anything to drop but was especially frustrated by the fact that she had taken a two shot lead after the front side but then a bogey followed by a double bogey opened the door for Austin.  Alex wasn’t certain if she needed the birdie putt on the last hole to win or not but she was focused on her game and only her game.
