CAGT’s Open at Fairfax National – Ochs Aces #7

April 16, 2010 by

The Capital Area Golf Tour (CAGT) held its first junior tournament of its spring schedule last weekend at Fairfax National Golf Club in Centreville, VA.  The two-day, 36-hole tournament took place under blue skies and great weather.  The highlight of the weekend had to be the hole-in-one by Adam Ochs of Ashburn, VA.  In the final round on the Wilderness Course, the par 3, number 7 was playing just shy of 160 yards.  Adam stepped up with an 8 iron, put a good swing on it and he had his 1.

Adam Ochs won the 16-18 Division. His second round 74 included a 1 on the par-3, number 7 (Wilderness Course).

He was also crowned Champion for the tournament in the Boys 16-18 year old division with a pair of 74s (148).   Ochs is a sophomore and a member of the golf team at Briar Woods High School in Ashburn, VA.  Rounding out the top-3 in that division were Jon Howard (a senior at Briar Woods and school teammate of Ochs) of Ashburn and Ben Ryalls of Charlottesville, VA.  Howard carded 79, 86 (165) holding off the consistent play of Ryalls by two – 84, 83 (167).

In the Boys 13-15, it was Harrisonburg, Virginia’s Robbie Failes, 76, 81 (157), taking home the big trophy with a four-stroke victory over Max Greenwald of Potomac, MD.  Greenwald, 83, 78 (161)  had the low final round score in his division to etch out second place by a stroke over Nick Bulgarino of Ellicott City, MD.  Bulgarino posted 82, 80 (162).

Charlottesville players Ian Buchanan and AJ Stouffer placed one and two in the Boys 10-12 year old division.  Buchanan  made both loops in 94, 92 (186) while Stouffer posted 96, 93 (189).  Will Haller of Gaithersburg, MD also carded a 189 (92, 97) but placed third to Stouffer based on a final-nine scorecard playoff.  The CAGT conducts a sudden-death playoff for first place and uses the scorecard playoff method to settle ties for second and third.

Alexandra Austin of Burke, VA was named Champion in the Girls 16-18 division with scores of 78, 82 (160).  Chloe Tawaststjerna from Middleburg, VA shot 91, 92 (183) for 1st in the Girls 13-15 division, while Jun Jae of Centreville, VA was victorious in the Girls 10-12 with rounds of 96, 96 (192).

The CAGT’s next tour stop is this weekend at Worthington Manor in Urbana, MD.

The CAGT recently announced that one of their tournaments has been selected to serve as a Callaway Junior World Championship qualifier.  That event is being held at Cannon Ridge Golf Club in Fredericksburg, VA (May 8/9).  This is an “open” tournament meaning that non-CAGT Tour members may compete in this event.  For complete scores from Fairfax National and more information about the Tour, check out the CAGT website at CAGT.ORG .
