McCarthy Moves On to Quarterfinals in Polo Golf Junior Classic

November 26, 2009 by

Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville, MD, the 30th seed,  continues on with his trek through match play at the Polo Junior Golf Junior Classic being held at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.  Second round play was suspended yesterday and completed this morning.  McCarthy, who was 2-up after five holes before play was suspended, defeated Clancy Waugh of North Palm Beach, FL, 3 and 2.   Waugh was the tournament’s 14th seed.  McCarthy went 1-up after the first hole and never relented the lead.  So far, he has defeated 3rd seed Niclas Carlsson of Enebyberg, Sweden and 14th seed Waugh.  McCarthy will meet the 22nd seeded Cameron Wilson of Rowayton, CT in the quarterfinals this afternoon.   They are scheduled to tee off at 1:20PM.

So far, McCarthy has mostly remained under the radar as far as national junior golf press coverage is concerned.  Granted, there are some big names remaining (Spieth, Whitsett, Grillo) but we predict that McCarthy will get his props nationally very soon.  As we reported earlier this year, McCarthy took flight awhile ago and has now clearly landed with both feet on the national stage.
