Falls Church Leads at National District Championship

September 22, 2009 by

The first round of the National District Championship, being played at Greendale Golf Course in Alexandria, VA concluded with Falls Church (317) leading Hayfield by 13 and Yorktown by 18.  Regardless of where each may finish, all 8 teams, down to the last player could be seen putting forth their best effort to help their team finish in the best possible position.

Falls Church was led by the play of sophomore Tyler Satorius’ even par 70 and senior Scott Slocum’s 76, that also happen to be the two low rounds overall.  Even though he started out birdie, par, bogey, bogey, bogey, Satorius managed two more birdies on the final two holes to go 35-35.  When asked what the team strategy is for tomorrow, he said “Just play from scratch.  Try not to give up too much.”   In response to what he thought about the likelihood of making it to the North Regionals, Falls Church coach Mike Powers said his players have worked hard all season.  “They’ve gone out and worked on their own time.  They are a great bunch of kids.  But, it’s a two-day tournament so I’d love to answer that  question for you tomorrow.”

Hayfield is a newcomer to the National District having moved over from the Patriot in a district realignment.  Currently, they stand in second by 5 strokes over third place Yorktown.  Juniors Brad Johnson and Tyler Reid both shot 79 to lead their team in scoring.  “I just couldn’t get anything going today,” Johnson said.  He added that he’s looking for a lower score tomorrow to help lead his team to the North Regionals.  Coach James Purdham from Hayfield indicated that he was pleased with the first day and went on to say “could we do better, sure, but I think there are seven other coaches who would say the same thing.  We haven’t played ourselves out of the tournament by any stretch which is all that you can ask of the kids after the first day…we still have a shot.”   When discussing the spread between Falls Church and Yorktown with his team in between and how they could pull it off, Purdham said “As with any level of golf competition, the back nine tomorrow will probably decide the tournament both from a team standpoint and an individual standpoint. Obviously it’s going to be very tough though because Falls Church is playing some awesome golf right now but anything can happen…and usually does on the golf course!”   The coach went on to mention, “Greendale Golf Course was in terrific shape and the course management folks couldn’t have been any nicer and more accommodating to all the kids.”

Yorktown finds themselves on the bubble as far as making it to the North Regionals as a team.  Each district sends the top two teams from its respective championship on to the North Region Championships.  Apparently, Yorktown recently lost two of its more seasoned players who moved from the area.  This has likely put a bit of pressure on the team.  Chris Williams, coach at Yorktown, says “the kids, they all kind of struggled a little bit today.”  He added that the strategy for tomorrow is “get a good night’s sleep, try not to dwell on it too much and come out and play tomorrow. The kids are a great group.  They are a good team and they will work hard tomorrow.”

Here are all the team scores from the first round of the National District Championship -
